TEXAS TOWNSHIP CEMETERIES
Texas Township's pioneer history, found in various historical books, can be pieced together to illustrate their determination to succeed. Many settlers arrived from around the world via steamboats, primarily following the completion of the Erie Canal.
The Hope and Virgo families were prominent farming families located on opposite sides of town, with the Hopes residing on the east side (8th Street) and the Virgos on the west side (S Avenue). In their 1892 publication, "Portrait and Biographical Record of Kalamazoo, Allegan, and Van Buren Counties," biographers Chapman Bros documented the lives of both families. At the time of the book's publication, both families were still living and their stories were included in the account.
